Hallo Forum!

In earlier releases of FreeNAS 8, I used to be able to remount the root disk into read-write mode (via
Code:
---------
mount -uw /
---------
...

In earlier releases of FreeNAS 8, I used to be able to remount the root disk into read-write mode (via

Code:

mount -uw /

command) and then add to the bottom of the /conf/base/etc/rc.local and /etc/rc.local files the following lines in order to have my NFS ports fixed to pre-defined port numbers, as follows:

Code:

# Lab settings
rpc_statd_flags="-p 4000"
rpc_lockd_flags="-p 4001"
mountd_flags="-p 4002"

Then after a reboot of the FreeNAS server, I could run an

Code:

rpcinfo -p

and verify that my NFS daemons were running on my fixed ports. This is needed in my environment because I have firewalls that only let these specific NFS ports through for NFS clients.

Anyways, this no longer works in current releases of FreeNAS 8.3.x. For the most current release, the RPC STATD and LOCKD daemons do take these settings just fine, but the MOUNTD daemon just disregards this setting. I found the only way to adjust the MOUNTD daemon flags is to edit /etc/rc.conf.local and /conf/base/etc/rc.conf.local and go to line 389 in vi and change the line to:

Code:

echo "mountd_flags=\"-p 4002 ${mountdflags}\""

As this appears to be the only way to pass in flags to the MOUNTD daemon now. I know this is all unsupported hackery of the NFS ports and maybe a general settings page is needed to allow users to adjust NFS ports via the GUI, but is there any chance in the interim we can cleanup the rc.conf.local to allow MOUNTD_FLAGS to be read from the rc.conf file again like it used to in prior releases of FreeNAS?

I'm looking to semi-automate the backup of my new FreeNAS-8.3.1-RELEASE-p2-x64 server so that I can permanently connect an external eSATA dock and when I dock an HD every couple weeks I can initiate a script that will mount the drive and sync my volume. Does anyone else do this, or are there reasons not to handle backups like this? If not, how do others backup their data? Building a second FreeNAS server is not an option for me. I know I could use a utility like RoboCopy or Rsync on Windows to sync over the network to an external device attached to a Windows machine but I thought I'd see if the first method is being used by anyone.

Hoping someone can help with this. Recently setup a Freenas box but performance seemed slow so I grabbed on old box and installed another copy of freenas on it - with some older hard drives. Testing was done from Windows 7 using Robocopy. Didn't used built-in raid on either box - but freenas raid mirror. Both setups using CIFS. See below.
Above result is pretty consistent that the new box is ~30% slower than the older crappy box. I tried switching cat5 cables but no dice.

So, what should I try next to figure this out:
1) Replace mobo integrated NIC with standalone NIC card
2) Switch to UFS on the new box? Makes no sense that UFS would be faster?
3) what else?

]Hi everyone

I have an 8.3 release on an amd x64 which fails to start the webgui. I rebooted today to replace a failed drive in a zraid and what I did, though I doubt it that it has anything with my issue, was offlined the disk from the webgui, shut the machine down and physically replaced the disk and once it booted back up again I ran into all sorts of errors. I also tried to delete/recreate the nginx files by doing:

# rm /usr/local/etc/nginx/nginx.conf*
# service ix-nginx start
# nginx

Below is the log, if someone can give me a hand here. Thank you.

Hi there,

Im replacing my old software nas solution with freenas but failed in setting it up over the webinterface.

Im having a 1TB hdd and a 3TB hdd. I would like to have them both as raid 1. The remaining 2TB on the one drive should just be unmirrored usable.
So Im creating a mirrored volume, its creating one with 1TB, all fine so far. But what now with the remaining 2TB? If I try to create another volume, there is no hdd selectable.

Any advices how to get that working?

For disks I have 6 WD Red 1TB.
The problem is I am getting 30-35MB/s. This seems kinda slow to me? Or should I not except anything more?
In the near future, 1-2 months, I'm getting 16GB more RAM and 6 more disks, WD Red 3TB. Any obvious problems with that other than the 32GB RAM with 6x1TB Disks + 6x3TB Disks?

Hello,

first, I'm a first timer at freenas and alike (but I've done my share part of other under-the-hood things)
Second, I read the
http://forums.freenas.org/showthread...ll=1#post58364
and
http://forums.freenas.org/showthread...sing-your-data
and
a few others. And I'm still going forward, so let's not debate in that direction.

shortly: I am setting up a storage/fileserver for my existing home esxi. Easiest and cheapest solution is to go for something like freenas. My HW setup is all dual-hdd/dual-ssds in software raid1. As I'm on a consumer grade board, every VM is doing it's own sw-raid.
Target usage for freenas is 80-90% actual data storage (pictures, movies, music, documents and so on) and archiving (old VMs, backups) and the rest, various test VM's that I may need (things like winxp with 256mb ram, nothing fancy and not in requirement of performance).
The key aspect here is data-safety.

At current point, everything is raid-mirrored except for the new freenas VM for which I cannot find any tutorials on how-to-properly do it. I'm an old RH user, now centos based, and except pre-build stuff, I never had to mingle with freebsd and alikes or other linuxes.

So the question is: can I setup a software raid for the freenas OS itself?

If not, would a daily backup of the VM itself do the job in case there is a hdd failure of the SSD it will be installed on? That is, assuming the SSD crashes now and I have a 23 hour old copy of the VM, replace the SSD and copy over the backup and start it, will it function alright, picking up where the crashed one has left of with whatever data-recovery options there are for these kinds of situations? (data virtual disks will be on other drives so the chances for the OS drive and a data drive to crash a the same time should be pretty much 0)

To note that critical data will be automatically and periodically backed up by the current data backup solution running daily. The freenas solution here addresses 2 problems in my environment:
- have the data available easily to all members of the family in one place without moving the external drives all the time from computer to computer
- for me to be able to recover most if not all of my work since the last backup (this is where raid1 comes into play)

The only loose end in this configuration is the freenas itself not being mirrored.

Thank you.

This will be used for backup, file sharing, live tv recording location, and sharing tv/movies to media extenders. eventually will set it up so my phone/tablet can access media remotely. Have Comcast (Xfinity) 27.5mbps down 7.5mbps up, gigabit router. Wan't to know if I'm skimping/going overboard anywhere.

I plan on running the 4 drives in raidz2 with the option to add 2 more later. So 4 x 4TB should give me almost 8TB usable space in raid2z? Also, would I just use one of the plugs on the network adapter, or plug both into the router?

Hi,

after having my old AMD-box runnning 8.3.1 RC1 for a while, I managed to get it to 'idle-shutdown' and WOL
suddenly seemed like a good idea, but, the onboard NIC (RTL 8139-based) doesnt support WOL.

Rummaging a bit uncovered a WOLable DLINK DFE-538 TX (rev D1), based on (a newer rev. of) the same chipset,
but freenas doesn't detect it. I've tried disabling the onboard NIC in BIOS, to no avail; I can't find a trace of detection
in any logs, and I've verified that the board actually works.

Output from pciconf (rl0 is the onboard NIC)
rl0@pci0:0:19:0:        class=0x020000 card=0xd0071631 chip=0x813910ec rev=0x10
vendor     = 'Realtek Semiconductor'
device = 'Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC (RTL-8139/8139C/8
class      = network
subclass   = ethernet

Any help would be appreciated; I'm loath to pony up for a new NIC, if all it takes is some console-labour.

Sincerely

Grazie mille :)
