So is there a way to tell which physical drive has failed?

Hi!

Just got my first freenas system running, and loving the challenge so far, with 2 wd reds in mirror. I bought 3 reds because i first planned on going raidz1 but changed my mind during configuration and went with mirror.
Mostly because it fits my upgrade pattern better and mirrors seemed more dynamic and faster than raidz
So i sit now with 2 reds in mirror now housing all the data from my synology, which has a green drive, and a spare red drive.
After hearing so bad rep about the green drive in raid 5 configurations i was wondering about mirrors? Thinkin about pairing it with my spare red and create striped mirror array, until i can replace it with another red or should i just not bother and wait for a new red?

Sorry about my english :) hope you can make sense of it.

Best regards

Dear Forum,

i'm completely new to FreeNAS and want to understand if what i try to archive can be done with reasonable effort.

I want to know if it is possible to share a mountpoint as SMB/AFP/FTP share, that is itself mounted in the FreeNAS box through SMB from another server? If so, can someone outline how to best approach this?

I have mounted the other machines SMB share under /mnt/reshare on the FreeNAS box which, apart from some basic network and admin password setup, has seen nothing configured yet. I was assuming to just be able to select /mnt/reshare now under "Sharing:Windows (CIFS) Shares:Add Windows Share" but when i try to, i only get a "/" in the path browser and with this, or when manually entering /mnt/reshare/, it errors with a message "The path must reside within a volume mount point", which is what i though i had given. I could not find the answer to this in the manual.

It must be something very obvious to the experienced FreeNAS admin why this won't work and how it would have to be done. Can anybody give me the required nudge into the right direction?

Many thanks for your help.

Cheers,

- Stefan

I'm in the process of building a new FreeNAS server and want to know if the following will work and if it's difficult to do.

I have a great deal on 2 X 2TB drives. I'm going to be building a RaidZ2 with 6 drives

2X2TB and 4X1TB

If I understand correctly max storage will be 4TB.

In the future, I'd like to upgrade the 4X1TB to 2 TB for a total storage of 8TB (Give or take for the over head I know it's not exactly 8TB)

If I understand correctly the storage space will only increase after I've upgraded all of the drive, is that correct?

Will the change be auto matic or do I need to do something for it to take effect?
Do I need to back up my data? Or do I just replace one drive at a time and there is no need to backup?

I know this is a lot of questions, but I'm sure someone out there can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX Case
Gigabyte GA-E350N E-350D A45 FCH VGA HDMI 7.1 Channel Audio mITX Motherboard
Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz HyperX Blu Memory Kit CL9 1.65V
4x WD 3TB Green drives (head parking turned off with wdidle3.exe)
Magna ATX-500W PSU

All works fine (uses less than 60w when idling which is nice) and so I put FreeNAS-8.3.1-RELEASE-p2-x64.img on a 4GB USB stick and booted the NAS from it, followed the online instructions for setting the static IP address/mask/gateway but it can't connect to any other machine on my network, nor those machines to it, not even pinging works from the box as it throws up the error "ping: sendto: Host is down".
I also tried NAS4Free and had exactly the same issue of no connectivity.

I know the network cable & motherboard work fine because I tried installing Windows on a hd with the necessary drivers and could browse webpages etc. without a problem.

Have to admit I'm stumped, does anyone what the issue could be?

I don't know why this is happening, but with my FreeNAS machine I can achieve anywhere from 10 to 200 KB/s I used to get a steady 11.3MB/s because my PC's network card has took a crap and only operates in 10/100 now, but that's not the issue the issue here is the fact that I can no longer obtain anymore then the measly KB/s as said before, I am not sure at all why this is happening,

Specs for the file server are

Intel P4 - 2.8ghz - I believe it has hyperthreading
2GB DDR memory
PCI Gigabit NIC
1TB Sata Disk
2 160GB IDE disks Raid1
1 250GB IDE disk

Network,
From the FreeNAS machine

FreeNAS -> Router -> PC
Gigabit.....................100Mb

As said before my network card has gigabit capabilities in the name but it only operates in 10/100Mb/s so that is where it is at,

If I go to the console on the FreeNAS machine, then go to the Shell I can type

ifconfig re0

And it is returned with this

[root@freenas ~]# ifconfig re0
re0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500
options=389b<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,VLAN_HWCSUM,WOL_UCAST
,WOL_MCAST,WOL_MAGIC>
ether 00:14:d1:22:c2:38
inet 192.168.1.118 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255
media: Ethernet autoselect (1000baseT <full-duplex>)
status: active
[root@freenas ~]#
[root@freenas ~]#

I can see that this end is running in gigabit, so to my PC from the Network and Sharing Center I can click on the Ethernet Connection and it displays 100Mb/s I don't think it is the router because I can plug the FreeNAS into the switch and obtain the same speed... I just thought of something that I should have before, I am going to plug the FreeNAS machine and my PC into the switch and see what happens, This will tell me if it is the router... That is going to be bad if it is, that sucker was expensive, I can say that sucks, I setup the network as mentioned and I am obtaining the 10/100 speeds, well I guess I answered it already, so, I guess I can say, let this be a guide to others, maybe a template as to what info and how much info would be great to have when answering a question on here and also try every possibility that comes to mind even if it sounds stupid try it, just don't break your hardware,

Thanks for reading this anyway,

Avoid the pain: Autotune

I learned "the hard way" that when you try auto tune you need to give FreeNAS time to "do it's thing." After you hit the "Save" button the icon changes to a please wait rotating GIF image. I did not notice this the first time (8.3.0) and quickly went to Reboot. FreeNAS did not try to stop me. I ended up with a corrupt and unbootable system. I rebuilt from scratch with 8.3.1 using the USB technique and restored the saved config file without problems. (The USB technique creates a USB flash drive that is ready for use and does not have to be setup otherwise.) I have not found a similar posting.

Another piece of information is that the tuneables and sysctls that show are all from autotune. There are others that FreeNAS keeps hidden from view.

Also, FreeNAS failed to install from my IDE CD drive attached to a Promise 300 PCI card. It went part way through the boot process then I got an error message that the CD drive could not be found. My setup worked previously from this drive.

I hope this helps.

I have Free-Nas 8.3.1 RC2.

Whenever I open any word files from the free-nas shares Word 2010 opens and says Contacting: \\SERVERNAME\folder and it just stays there forever. The connection then crashes to the free-nas and I have to do a release renew on the IP address before it opens again.

Does anyone know any quick fixes to this issue?

Edit: This actually happens with Excel also.
Edit2: Just noticed if I use UNC path it doesn't work...but if I use a mapped network drive it does work.

We need to use UNC path though.

Hi everyone

I have an 8.3 release on an amd x64 which fails to start the webgui. I rebooted today to replace a failed drive in a zraid and what I did, though I doubt it that it has anything with my issue, was offlined the disk from the webgui, shut the machine down and physically replaced the disk and once it booted back up again I ran into all sorts of errors. I also tried to delete/recreate the nginx files by doing:

# rm /usr/local/etc/nginx/nginx.conf*
# service ix-nginx start
# nginx

Below is the log, if someone can give me a hand here. Thank you.

I have tried a couple of things, like enabling jumbo frames, and other fancy network stuff. Got a 1GBit/s network going.

My hardware is:
i3-3225 CPU @ 3.30GHz
2x8GB DDR3 1600MHz ECC/Unbuffered
X9SCL-F

For disks I have 6 WD Red 1TB.

The problem is I am getting 30-35MB/s. This seems kinda slow to me? Or should I not except anything more?

In the near future, 1-2 months, I'm getting 16GB more RAM and 6 more disks, WD Red 3TB. Any obvious problems with that other than the 32GB RAM with 6x1TB Disks + 6x3TB Disks?

Hello,

first, I'm a first timer at freenas and alike (but I've done my share part of other under-the-hood things)
Second, I read the
http://forums.freenas.org/showthread...ll=1#post58364
and
http://forums.freenas.org/showthread...sing-your-data
and
a few others. And I'm still going forward, so let's not debate in that direction.

shortly: I am setting up a storage/fileserver for my existing home esxi. Easiest and cheapest solution is to go for something like freenas. My HW setup is all dual-hdd/dual-ssds in software raid1. As I'm on a consumer grade board, every VM is doing it's own sw-raid.
Target usage for freenas is 80-90% actual data storage (pictures, movies, music, documents and so on) and archiving (old VMs, backups) and the rest, various test VM's that I may need (things like winxp with 256mb ram, nothing fancy and not in requirement of performance).
The key aspect here is data-safety.

At current point, everything is raid-mirrored except for the new freenas VM for which I cannot find any tutorials on how-to-properly do it. I'm an old RH user, now centos based, and except pre-build stuff, I never had to mingle with freebsd and alikes or other linuxes.

So the question is: can I setup a software raid for the freenas OS itself?

If not, would a daily backup of the VM itself do the job in case there is a hdd failure of the SSD it will be installed on? That is, assuming the SSD crashes now and I have a 23 hour old copy of the VM, replace the SSD and copy over the backup and start it, will it function alright, picking up where the crashed one has left of with whatever data-recovery options there are for these kinds of situations? (data virtual disks will be on other drives so the chances for the OS drive and a data drive to crash a the same time should be pretty much 0)

To note that critical data will be automatically and periodically backed up by the current data backup solution running daily. The freenas solution here addresses 2 problems in my environment:
- have the data available easily to all members of the family in one place without moving the external drives all the time from computer to computer
- for me to be able to recover most if not all of my work since the last backup (this is where raid1 comes into play)

The only loose end in this configuration is the freenas itself not being mirrored.

Thank you.
