I think you almost missed the point, you CAN'T add disks to a VDEV. So you answered your own question, start from scratch.

right I know that you can't add disks to a VDEV. But is there no simpler method, short of re-config from scratch?
1.) Make a full system structure backup, minus data(if this possible?)
    2.) Backup data
3.) Re-install FreeNAS (not reconfig, just setup new pool)
    4.) setup ZFS pool
5.) dump structure back on to pool or ?
    6.) Restore FreeNAS backup?
    7.) copy data back.

    not possible, is it?

Yes, if you do those steps you will end up with a vdev with however many disks you wanted to add. But it will be a new vdev. You are not adding disks to your current vdev.

I have updated the presentations to include a little more stuff that have been common problems for newbies and new stuff for 8.3.1.

Please provide any feedback either in this thread or via PM. Especially if there are any errors.

    Thanks,

    -Cyberjock

    Cyberjock, great presentation, thank you!

I think the penultimate point on the final slide has the wrong year.

Cyberjock, thank you very much for that guide. I am moving from raid + lvm (mdadm) to zfs and your guide makes it simple to understand. I am reading through the manual and hopefully that will clarify everything else up. Appreciate all you have done.

Yes, I am aware that they links went 404. I setup a new script to backup my Dropbox and Google Drive. Unfortunately instead of copying I moved the files to my server.. whoops. Then I left town before I noticed the issue. I'll be back home in a couple of hours and I'll have them fixed then.

    Sorry for any inconvenience.

    Edit: Links should be working.

Sincerely, I would like to thank Cyberjock for taking his time and
trouble of making such a wonderful slide about ZFS storage design.

Highly recommend to the noobs who want to understand more
about ZFS. This should be a sticky on forum for all noobs who
    discover and learn about ZFS.

The slide content really spelt out what are the "dos" and "don'ts" about ZFS.

To me as noob in the ZFS world, the slide really educated me the
    building blocks of ZFS.

It is really a life saver, because I have been searching
on the internet on how to understand ZFS better for a long time, but
every time I searched, I always ended up in frustration.

Glad it helped. I knew nothing about FreeBSD and ZFS until Feb of last year. Since I had all this documentation and knowledge I figured I'd put it into a slideshow and hopefully save other people more than 2 weeks worth of research. The do's and don'ts are mostly from the sheer number of people that continue to get those exact situations wrong. I hate answering the same questions 3-5 times a week.
